Both Chinese, and Japanese Wisteria is highly invasive where I live in South Jersey. Besides covering a tree, wisteria will also choke out a whole forest by sending out runners to find other trees. These runners are like a combination of root and vine which makes them very strong and flexible. They can also grow up to 10 feet per year. The bark of the runners can also be peeled and twisted into cordage. All of these factors make for a very versatile and sustainable basket weaving material. The removal of wisteria also keeps the forest healthy.
