Mistletoe Oak Bowl and Plate by Janine Wang
Mistletoe-infected Oregon White Oak
8.125" dia x 2" h, 8.375" dia x 1" h
Process/Concept:
This plate and bowl were made out of a mistletoe oak burl I received from an arborist in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. It’s a burl that formed when mistletoe and tree coexist. Mistletoe is parasitic, and roots into the host tree, which in this case was an Oregon White Oak. As the tree attempted to heal around it, the grain swirled and formed incredible figure, including witches broom (the big black broom you can see in the bowl, which is actually the roots of the mistletoe plant) and spaghetti grain (self explanatory). Additionally, this a crotch piece, so there are a few more grain directions, with a few piths thrown in there for good measure. The profile on both pieces is designed to showcase the wood and fit the hand.
From the Artist:
Please see Process/concept description for a description of the material used. It's important to me to understand the origins of our materials, and it's easy to get excited about it when it comes to wood. The tree you're working with has lived a whole life, and that life is very legible through the material. In a way, the tree lives on as wood, and lives on in the things we create with it. As a turner I count myself lucky that the connection is so direct-- oftentimes, a tree comes down, fresh, from a place you know, and then there it is on your lathe. I recently moved from the east coast (right near Peters Valley) to the Pacific Northwest, where I now teach in a department of Wood Science and Engineering. It's been a whole reorientation process, and a large part of that reorientation was done through craft. These days we're seeing these material origins in sharper contrast, thanks to the relative anonymity of all the commercial goods around us. I'm looking forward to a hyper-local experience during our workshop! We'll be doing some green turning (fresh local wood!), with blank prep, and I'm going to bring my loupes so we can hopefully get excited about all these things in the class.
