Madeleine Messinger "Typewriter Stories"
handmade books and video showcasing the materials collected from the interactive art project
books are 10" x 5" each
"Typewriter Stories is an interactive art project. Typewriters were staged in public spaces with the simple prompt “My mother always…My mother never…”. I was lugging my typewriters all over town and leaving them on the sidewalk, in classrooms, at bustling coffee shops. Three were installed in the lobby of the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) and also during my two-month residency at Detroit Public Library. I was hell-bent on as many fingers as possible clacking those keys and answering my prompt. After each day, I would return to my typewriters and read the responses. They were troubling, funny, and moving - sometimes all at the same time. The typewriter transformed from an object of personal use to something that connected me with hundreds of people. By combining the typewriter with a prompt on the personal topic of child-mother relationships, I was able to tap into the distinctive life experiences and upbringings of strangers. My intervention sought to create moments of reflection for my anonymous users, employing their minds and hands to leave their unique impressions. This installation showcases three handmade books containing a selection of original responses from the project. The video component is a montage; one part footage gathered on site from the project, the other historic footage of typewriter commercials that place its cultural significance."
At Peters Valley, I found myself immersed in a world of art, craft, and instruction. I experienced a special kinship with fellow studio assistants, as well as the artists in residence and the visiting instructors; many of which I still remain close to. The experience of being an assistant was unlike anything I have ever experienced in school. As the Special Topics assistant, I was exposed to entirely new mediums such as lampworking, plein air painting and mosaics, only to name a few. Working with the instructors and students was extremely rewarding and strengthened my passion to facilitate other’s artistry. It gave me insight into different ways to be part of the artistic community even if you are not the ultimate artist. My summer at Peters Valley propelled me to continue this quest in the artistic process, shaping the trajectory of my coming years at the University of Michigan and beyond.Madeleine Messinger, Brooklyn, NY
