My pieces dip from 2D to 3D, to light and shadow, and back. Here, the thin wooden ladder provides a framework for a scene of cut paper shapes and wooden constructions, where a route of staircases, ladders, and improvised scaffolding leads you up from small houses below into paper clouds above. At the top, a single kite reaches up, tied by a thin line back down to earth. Slightly sweet, slightly wistful, this piece encompasses both the feeling of wonder and the experience of searching, of movement. The kite at the top encapsulates these emotions: Lightweight, delicate, and capable of joyful flight, these creatures rely on internal balance, tension, pressure, and constant re-adjustment while also being deeply dependent on their environments. Like us, they are in continual motion, kept both afloat and anchored by tenuous lines.

From the Artist:
Often in my current practice, I use as much scrap material as possible. The wooden parts of this piece are made from small pieces of leftover scrap wood, and the vellum paper was given to me by a friend. I like the way these material limitations provide structure as I am creating.
