Porcelain and Brick Clay

My pots are made with marbled clay and polished to various textures. The intention behind this process is to create a piece that almost looks like stone rather than being made of ceramic, making the viewer question where the matrix of the structure ends and the surface of the pot begins. This trick of the eye invites one to interact with the piece to feel the unique texture. I do this by wedging porcelain with an iron rich groggy clay, being careful not to mix them too thoroughly so the marbled pattern emerges and creates a swirling quality. When the two clays are combined, I throw my desired shape on the wheel. I then carefully watch the piece as it dries for approximately two weeks, flipping when the rim has hardened sufficiently. Through trimming I am able to fine tune the form of the pot while also exposing more of the marbling of the two clay bodies. After firing, the pot has rough textures from the brick clay that rises to the surface. By using an electric orbital stone polisher and working my way through various grits of diamond pads, I polish the vessel to create the matte surface. This piece is polished up to 800 grit and took about 6 hours in total to polish. While the piece still looks rough, when it is touched it is actually buttery soft. This dichotomy between appearance and texture creates a surprising and engaging experience.

*Please note that all online and in-person purchases of Exhibition work while the show is up will remain in the gallery until the show's end date. After the show's end date the work can be picked up or shipped to you.
Special Rate Items are items that are over-sized or not eligible for free shipping over $250. You total order will be charged a flat rate of $25 to ship. Special Rate Items will be noted as such in the item's description.

Sales Tax
Peters Valley is required to charge sales tax on purchases shipped to New Jersey.
Insurance
Insurance can be purchased separately through third-party company Route during checkout. Route provides protection for shipments that are lost, broken, or stolen. Route is added to your cart at checkout to enable protection by default, but can be removed if you chose to opt out of insuring your order. If you choose to opt out of the Route Insurance, and your package is lost, stolen or damaged, you will have to file a claim with the shipping carrier directly.
