Jon Hadden "Iron Spring"
forging, traditional joinery

"Often times my better pieces are created when I come up with them on the fly. This project is no exception. I started with a quick chalk sketch on the forge, and filled in the blanks from there. Interestingly enough the final piece looks nothing like that sketch. I titled this piece Iron Spring because, similar to the nature’s way, the floral forms guided their own way out of nonexistence, sprouting upon my anvil, under my hammer, with only subtle guidance from the laws of physics and my creative whims. I like to see where the steel takes me."
I created this piece using a new mindset that I developed here at Peters Valley School of Craft as a Summer Assistant. As an assistant I was given the great privilege of working with many instructors from different places and different walks of life, in different stages in their career. From the multitude of learning experiences I had with these great folks, I began to think differently about my work. I began to think a few more steps ahead. I became a little bolder and acquired a willingness to push out from the bounds of what I knew I could do, to the outer edges of what I might possibly do. I began to focus more on the form of my work, in seeing a bigger picture, and in doing so I derived an even richer satisfaction in the work process itself. Without the time I spent here at Peters Valley my career as a smith would have been quite stagnant and I am incredibly thankful for all of the opportunities I have been afforded.
Jon Hadden, Livingston Manor, NY
Jon Hadden has been forging for five years with a general focus on tools and hardware. He began teaching himself in his front yard. Jon took his first class here at Peters Valley School of Craft, before receiving additional instruction at the New England School of Metalwork. He returned to Peters Valley as the 2018 and 2019 blacksmith studio summer assistant. Jon finds beauty and most importantly; utility in this raw, elemental craft that takes seemingly inanimate materials and brings them to life through fire.
