Currently, 70% of my work is being made with “wild clay” dug in Millville, NJ. Brought to my studio in buckets, the clay is dried, crushed, hydrated, screened and mixed into a workable and durable clay body. Additionally, I’m gathering local materials for use in slips and glazes, including marl dug at Edelman Fossil Park and Museum, sand from local quarries and the jersey shore, oyster shells, and wood ash. Immersing myself in the use and application of local materials is having an impact upon my thinking, my creative process and my work. It is a transformative experience when the work goes through a “trial by fire” of the kiln to become permanent. It is both exciting and hard work. At times I am in awe; that I am able to dig a raw material, clay, from the earth and turn it into works of beauty and use.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"2026 Making Matters Exhibition","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44247916871860,"sku":null,"price":650.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0311\/0859\/5757\/files\/AlanWilloughby_CelebratingDiversity_Equity_Inclusion.jpg?v=1781640657","url":"https:\/\/www.petersvalleygallery.org\/products\/celebrating-diversity-equity-inclusion-by-alan-willoughby","provider":"Peters Valley Gallery","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
