Beryl Perron-Feller "Square Knot"
gold fill wire, recycled fabric, magnets
10" x 8"
"My father once joked that his biggest regret as a parent was that he didn't teach me more knots. The joke stuck with me and left me fixated on the ways in which children are delegated certain skills at a young age. I have crocheted wire, a traditionally female skill taught to me by my mother, into lengths of rope, then tied into various boy scout and climbing knots, a practical skill that is often saved for young boys. These pieces acknowledge the duality of binary gender as I wrestle with my own identity and constantly strive to find the grey areas within it."
My experience as a Peters Valley assistant was extremely formative. I grew so much learning from many skilled instructors within my own discipline, and also benefited from being surrounded by people working in different mediums. My fellow assistants were also gifted teachers. Beyond the opportunity to participate in so many workshops throughout the season, I made professional connections that have helped me establish myself in the metalsmithing and contemporary jewelry fields. I have had the opportunity to do things like curate an exhibition for NYC Jewelry Week, and participate in craft shows such as ACC Baltimore thanks to the continued support of Peters Valley in the years since my assistantship season.Beryl Perron-Feller, Bayside, NY
Beryl Perron-Feller is a native New Yorker with an interdisciplinary craft practice. She is inspired by the intersections of art, culture, and science. Her work draws from personal exploration of gender roles and power through investigations of hard and soft mediums such as metal, textiles, and ceramics. In much of Beryl’s work, creating art is used as a mode of research; the process of making is just as important, if not more important than the final product. The connection she feels to materials and the tactile process of constructing become a way to find comfort. Crafting functional objects such as pottery and jewelry come most naturally to her. Wearable or usable pieces engage the viewer in a tactile way that reflects the comfort and closeness she feels in the process of making.
