"This piece was made in memory of family member Shoji Ikeno. It references an incense burner made in southern Japan in the 1700s."
There were many firsts for me at Peters Valley. First stay out of a city, extended time in the United States, living and working together communally, opportunity to show work outside of school, and more. Everyone is made to feel welcome no matter what stage we are at in our lives, or whether or not we are ready to participate. We meet people from diverse backgrounds and all skill levels, and many of the relationships formed are lasting. This is not an ordinary studio assistantship or residency. There is something about being surrounded by nature that is a great equalizer, it brings everyone together. There is a sense of belonging, care and support that comes with being in the presence of other makers in this oasis in the woods. It has taken many years to process what the experience has meant to me and it still continues to take shape. What remains is the sense of connection to a place that is both frozen in time in my memory, and evolving and continuing to make an impact. It’s the place and its people that come to mind each time I’m making a decision about next steps. Peters Valley grounds me, and continues to influence my practice today.Amy Shindo, Philadelphia, PA
