Mary Forst "Pearl Cocktail Ring"
mild steel, cultured pearls
hand-fabricated using steel, crushed pearl and whole pearls
2.5" x 2.5"; size 7
"This piece titled, Pearl Cocktail Ring was made from mild steel, and cultured pearls for a local exhibition, Cocktail Accoutrements. This exhibition was hosted by The Metals Collective, a talented group of makers in Portland Maine. My use of the pearl, whether the form is fully realized, crushed, or abstracted, operates as a representation of my relationship to heirloom. Pearl, as a material, signifies a personal, sentimental value that describes a strong bond between generations of powerful women in my family. Utilizing this material and juxtaposing it with blackened steel allows me to honor these women while exploring my own relationship to this bond."
My time working at Peters Valley School of Craft has greatly influenced my career as a metalsmith and jeweler. I had the honor of being the fine jewelry studio assistant in the summer of 2014. I lived and worked on campus for over three months and assisted at least 7 workshops. With each workshop I learned something new that further progressed my studio practice. The most influential workshop I was a part of was titled “Steel Fabrication”, and was taught by Lynn Batchelder. Much of my work is now made from mild steel and uses many of the same techniques taught in that intensive class. I went on to create my Undergrad thesis using steel fabrication and now use it in my production line which is for sale at the Peters Valley Gallery as well as several locations in Portland, ME.Mary Forst, Portland, ME
