Katie Fee "Terra Cotta Bract"

"Terra Cotta Bract is constructed from earthenware slabs, and represents an attempt to blend referential forms into a table top object. The form was inspired simultaneously by visions of a magnified seed pod and a contracted brutalist structure. I’m excited about the physical connections and references the viewer makes from this piece."
Looking back, my time at Peters Valley feels like a pressure cooker of ideas and inspiration. As a clay studio assistant, I worked directly with a new artist instructor each week, and got to know their students, who bring equally interesting backgrounds and bodies of work to the studio. Not to mention, our cohort of students and fellows were in tight quarters with one another, so I got to build and exchange ideas with more peers than ever before. Seeing others engaged in making and pursuing their ideas acted as a mirror to reflect my own intentions. I learned more about why I love clay and why I need to be an artist than ever before. Three years later, I am still unpacking moments and memories from my time working at Peter’s Valley.
Of equal importance, managing the clay studio with Bruce Dehnert and Momi Green completely exploded and rebuilt my frame of mind about what is possible in ceramics. I’ve used Bruce’s firing schedules, shop maintenance practices, and most importantly, kept his work ethic close in my own studio practice. Spending time with Bruce, Kulvinder, and Momi in and out of the studio invigorated my dreams and ideals for Art.Katie Fee, St. Petersburg, FL
