Erin Hoffman "To Reveal, To Conceal"
hot sculpted and fused glass
12"h x 3"w
"To Reveal, To Conceal is a series of hot sculpted and fused glass “pieces” that spell the word 'screen' forwards, backwards, and upside down. It is a study of the word, screen, as a contronym or a word that can have two opposite meanings. A screen can reveal us truths but also conceal them. The glass discs are cold-worked into a circular shape and rotate in the steel frame which references a cosmetic swivel mirror. I question how much we share with other people and how much we attempt to conceal. Oftentimes these lines are blurred in our contemporary society of interactions where we are constantly sharing information while also fabricating reality."
Having the opportunity to work as an assistant at Peters Valley was a vital time for me to experience, grow, and learn as a young artist. The magic at Peters Valley is something I will always cherish and am grateful to have been able to experience. The unique aspects of this school include the opportunity to engage with artists from different backgrounds and experience a range of materials and methods of working. Peters Valley allowed me to grow in confidence with assisting in the classes, helping coordinate the beginning of new sessions, and foster creative energy that flowed through every session. I learned more about my passions working with sculpture, interacting with like-minded people, and the importance of craft in my practice. Peters Valley will always hold a special place in my heart as a warm space that cultivated inspiration and life long memories.
Erin Hoffman, Allentown, PA
Erin Hoffman is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in glass. While teaching glass and making her own work she explores ideas of language and technology in our continually developing digital culture. She is interested in the complexity surrounding conversation––when text falls short, messages overlap, and meaning is distorted. A large part of her practice includes traveling to assist other artists, promoting art-making, and teaching. From 2015-2018 she worked as the Departmental Assistant for the University of Louisville glass studio. Hoffman recently received her MFA (2020) in the Sculpture and Dimensional Studies graduate program at Alfred University and hopes to continue teaching, collaborating, and traveling.
