"My artwork has come to serve, and be served by memory. An image of a lightning bug may be just that, but my hope and aim is for viewers to arrive at a more personal experience with my work that reaches at their own associations with the imagery involved. I want them to see my work, and have them return to the feeling of a time from their youth, cupping a glowing insect in the palms of their hands. I want my work to swell and expand with the fuel of nostalgia, so that while the image of a swallow’s nest is the vessel, what it contains is the shining memory of standing, watching the sky from a small porch outside of a weaving studio, all the looms silent for a moment within its walls, as baby birds fly for the first time over the telephone wires."
My experience at Peters Valley came at a time in my life when I was beginning to seriously define myself as a maker for the first time. My assistantship was right before my senior year of undergraduate school, and right before I was expected to produce a defining body of work for my BFA thesis exhibition. The title of that exhibition would turn out to be “Meaningful Interactions with the Wild,” which came from so much that I experienced while working at Peters Valley. On the craft school’s campus, I was inspired by the wilds of the natural world that surrounded me, and by how the studios wove themselves through the landscape. There was also a subtler kind of wild that I interacted with here— one that I’ve now come to understand as something that comes with being a part of a community. I had never occupied a place like the one I held at Peters Valley: one where I was able to teach, learn, connect with others, grow, and explore process and materials, all in equal measure.

Daisy Greenwell is an artist and museum professional living and working in Philadelphia. She graduated from Rowan University in New Jersey in 2016 with a BFA is Studio Art, focusing on metalsmithing and printmaking, with a minor in Art History. At the same time, she also received a BA in Music with a focus on classical trombone performance.
Since receiving her undergraduate degree, Daisy has been working towards a career in Art Conservation, studying Organic Chemistry, and taking jobs and internships within the museum and cultural heritage sphere. She has completed preventative conservation work and conservation treatments on art objects and cultural heritage objects working in Central Park in New York City, and in both the Paper Conservation Laboratory and Objects Conservation Laboratory at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She is now working at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, where she performs and documents all conservation treatment on the museum’s metalwork collection.
Daisy spent one transformative summer at Peters Valley School of Craft in 2015 before her final year in undergraduate school. She believes that her time there greatly contributed to her ambitions of becoming an Art Conservator, as her assistantship ingrained within her the importance of fine craft to material culture. It is her goal to use her skills as a craftsperson, and her knowledge and abilities as a conservator to preserve the objects that belong to the fine craft movement, therefore keeping alive the spirit of master makers for generations to come
