Currently, 70% of my work is being made with “wild clay” dug in Millville, NJ. Brought to my studio in buckets, the clay is dried, crushed, hydrated, screened and mixed into a workable and durable clay body. Additionally, I’m gathering local materials for use in slips and glazes, including marl dug at Edelman Fossil Park and Museum, sand from local quarries and the jersey shore, oyster shells, and wood ash. Immersing myself in the use and application of local materials is having an impact upon my thinking, my creative process and my work. It is a transformative experience when the work goes through a “trial by fire” of the kiln to become permanent. It is both exciting and hard work. Although the finished piece may appear complex, it demonstrates how a supportive creative environment, guided instruction, and a willingness to push beyond one’s current abilities can lead to outcomes that exceed expectations. This work was crafted using the copper foil technique. Each piece of glass is carefully chosen for its distinctive color and texture, then precisely cut and ground, wrapped in copper foil, and skillfully soldered together to form the final composition.

From the Artist:
The glass I choose for each piece is largely influenced by availability. When I sell my work at events, I’m often asked where I source my glass—usually a sign that the person asking also works with glass and understands how limited the options are in New York’s Capital District for purchasing supplies or learning the craft. I source materials by driving up to three hours to distributors, shopping online, and through generous connections with people who are passing along glass they no longer use. Access to sheet glass that may no longer be produced adds another distinctive layer to my one‑of‑a‑kind work.
Many people are hesitant to touch stained glass, having been taught that it is fragile—I grew up believing the same. Through working with the medium, however, I’ve learned that glass is often far more durable than people expect. Notre Dame Cathedral, for example, has stood for hundreds of years through extreme weather and even a devastating fire, yet its stained glass endures.
My goal is to help build a stained glass community in the Capital District: a space for creators to share the joy of breaking glass, working with hot metal, and creating together. I couldn’t stop crying because I was convinced I would never see him again. He was my protector and I looked up to him. And then he was gone. We didn’t know if he was alive or dead. I didn’t really understand what was happening at the time and we weren’t allowed to talk about it. Part of me blamed myself for him going. My family fell apart. There were so many secrets, so much blame, and his absence was always felt. There was a hole in our lives shaped like him. 22 years later he returned. By that time, he had been gone longer than I had been alive before he disappeared. While it was definitely a good thing that he returned, we were pretty much strangers. I was an adult, a business owner, a survivor of grief. For years I wished for him. But not everything was resolved when he came home. I had hoped that when he came back, my relationship with my brother would be magically restored… I guess I’m still waiting. Memory palaces are used as a mnemonic device. My memory palace of this time period in my life would be shaped like the old red barn behind my childhood home with a rusty metal roof. This sculpture that I made is all enameled. It is adorned with images from my childhood, using the waterslide decal method. For the roof, I corrugated some extra thin metal and enameled that. The panels are sewn on and remind me of how sometimes the metal would move in the Florida hurricanes. I call this piece, “Still Waiting”. I think part of me will always be waiting for the version of my brother who lived in my memories.

From the Artist:
One of the things that I love about waterslide decals is that you can embellish your enameled surfaces with your own images. Because of the iron oxide in the ink, all of the images look sepia toned. Some artists do not like this, but I think they look like old photographs and is perfect for working with themes of memory. I was trained as a painter and mixed media artist. One of my goals in my work is to blend my background in painting and illustration with my metalwork. Enamel is a perfect vehicle for adding narrative content. This piece is not so much about my brother, as it is about me dealing with his absence. It shows me before and after his departure – the carefree child who played with baby dolls and the sadness of a child who was not allowed to talk about his disappearance and found comfort in cats and imaginary landscapes. There aren’t many pictures of me from after he disappeared. My father was an amateur photographer, but after my brother went missing, he stopped taking pictures. Memory is such a funny, mutable thing. I am starting to forget. In conversations with other people, I realize that some things have been blocked out and some things have been let go off as I have learned to navigate loss and healing. The photos are evidence of that time. Much of my work references the imaginary world I created in the wake of his leaving, but I rarely make work so directly about those events. This enameling process allows me to do that.

Silver, copper, vitreous enamel

4" x 4" x 3.5"

Process/Concept:
This is a copper and silver bowl covered with a cloisonné vitreous enamel design. Quick decisions and careless design is best avoided as mistakes are not easily fixed. This is something that draws me to the medium. Working slowly with an unforgiving material encourages thoughtfulness and resists overproduction. The introduction of found items such as sea urchin shells into my ornament work coupled with dyed curly maple finials provides unique color contrasts.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0311/0859/5757/files/BrianMaguire_SeaUrchinswithBirdhouseandHollowForm.jpg?v=1781709889

Watercolor paper

11" x 14"

Process/Concept:
Burning on paper presents unique challenges. The organic shapes are formed using a pick-up technique, where the sheds are hand selected across the width of the loom for each pass of the weft yarn. The alternating layers are carefully planned in panels, which are then stitched together. Reversals in which layer of cloth is on top serve to obscure and alter the original line drawing that composed the piece. This imagery in this piece came from line drawings and studies I was doing on paper. Interested in the way that pattern obscures image, and in our bodies' intimate and evolutionary relationship with cloth, I am always curious about using pattern, color, and layered weaving techniques to represent images of the body and then obscure them. It's important to me to understand the origins of our materials, and it's easy to get excited about it when it comes to wood. The tree you're working with has lived a whole life, and that life is very legible through the material. In a way, the tree lives on as wood, and lives on in the things we create with it. As a turner I count myself lucky that the connection is so direct-- oftentimes, a tree comes down, fresh, from a place you know, and then there it is on your lathe. I recently moved from the east coast (right near Peters Valley) to the Pacific Northwest, where I now teach in a department of Wood Science and Engineering. It's been a whole reorientation process, and a large part of that reorientation was done through craft. These days we're seeing these material origins in sharper contrast, thanks to the relative anonymity of all the commercial goods around us. I'm looking forward to a hyper-local experience during our workshop! We'll be doing some green turning (fresh local wood!), with blank prep, and I'm going to bring my loupes so we can hopefully get excited about all these things in the class.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0311/0859/5757/files/JanineWang_MistletoeOakBowlandPlate.jpg?v=1781720859
https://www.petersvalleygallery.org/collections/2026-making-matter-fresh-perspectives-in-fine-craft.oembed
