Wood veneer, electrical components
20.5" dia x 7.75"
"My current work explores the use of a unique, translucent plywood to make sculptural light fixtures. Whereas regular wood veneer would simply snap, this material is quite flexible, and when scored with a knife, is able to be folded like paper. Also notable is that it is good on two sides, and does not have an unsightly paper or fleece backing as do other engineered veneers on the market.
After a long search and several failed attempts, I finally found a shop with state-of-the-art CNC equipment that is able to (and perhaps more importantly, *willing* to) digitally cut and print on this material for me. After some initial trial and error, I am now able to email drawings and artwork to the shop, and they send me back my parts in the mail. I then assemble the lights by hand, which involves staging multiple glue-ups, with a final cleanup and thorough sanding of the edges.
Regarding the printed surface, the artwork and patterns I employ are a deliberate response to the forms on which they will be placed. It is also important to me that the artwork express the capabilities and characteristics of the digital printing process."
