Spray paint on laser cut wood
10" x 10" x 0.125"
"My practice focuses on research using technology to sculpt traditional materials. I strongly believe there are new ways of looking at art and craft focusing on the technologies available.
Cutting, carving and perforating wood through burning with a laser cutter represents the tensions between tradition and evolution. It creates beauty through the actions of damaging and destroying.
My work focuses on creating textures and forms through precise carving and cutting. The process consists of meticulous steps merging the physical and digital worlds, re-interpreting the tools used for painting using new technologies. It starts with hand paintings created by physical brushstrokes, which are used as guides manipulated with computer programs and mapped to create an anatomy that can be translated in a 3-dimensional form. I then program graphics into laser cutter settings which carve, cut and score wood to create intricate pieces. I translate the images with slight pixilation to emphasize the presence of technology.
Back to the physical world, I make the decision to leave them natural, paint and transform the surface or use them as installations working with light to create another projected layer.
This notion plays with the viewer’s sense of reality giving the impression of organic artificial forms while, in reality they are computed and digital works. The first impression of the work is a traditional painting technique while looking closer and examining the process the work takes shape as a mix of man-made and computer made."
