Steel, gold, fine silver, powder coat

"Scales is a look at combining industrial and fine jewelry techniques to create a wearable work of art reminiscent of manmade armor and naturally occurring patterns of feathers and scales in wildlife. The collection started with the idea of making something that appeared complicated but could be mass produced. Designing began with paper as a simple print cut out by hand with scissors. The design evolved as the material changed to steel and would evolve again by choosing a different material. The series is dealing with repetition including shapes, shades of color and layers. This was an idea that seemed so simple but became very complex. To produce so many pieces in a timely manner I outsourced the cutting of the steel pieces to an industrial laser cutter. I was still left with the final finishing, forming and assembling of the parts. I knew I wanted to play with color and since I was already incorporating industrial techniques I used powder coating. This allowed me to color multiple pieces at the same time. I still used traditional jewelry skills to assemble with hand formed rivets."
